After 21 seasons, Brendan Shanahan announced his retirement on Tuesday and what a resume he leaves behind. The future hall of famer leaves the sport 11th all time with 656 goals and 23rd all time with 1,354 points in 1,524 games. He is the only player to score 600 goals and have 2000 minutes in penalties.

Shanahan was drafted by the New Jersey Devils in 1987 going 2nd overall in the entry draft. Brendan played for 4 other teams in his career ( St. Louis, Hartford, Detroit and the Rangers) before ending back in New Jersey half way through last season. After being signed in the off season, Shanahan and Jacques Lemaire had a falling out during training camp.

“I would like to thank my family and all of the friends who have helped me achieve and maintain my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League. I am enormously grateful to all of my coaches and teammates I’ve had the privilege of learning from and playing along side of, throughout my career…”

Some of Shanahans’ accomplishments were winning three Stanley Cups (1997,98 and 2002) all with Detroit, an Olympic gold medal and played in eight NHL All-Star Games.
