We see it time and time again on the ice, poor sportsmanship after giving up a goal. This time it proved to be costly for Florida Panther’s goaltender Thomas Vokoun. Panthers defenseman Keith Ballard pulled the dumbest stunt yet this season while attempting break his stick over the crossbar after Atlanta’s goal midway into the first period, struck his own goaltender in the head.

Vokoun suffered an ear laceration and was alert when taken off the ice on a stretcher. Although there is not a rule of high sticking your own player in the NHL, the Florida Panthers management needs to address this with either a fine or a suspension with out pay to Keith Ballard. This type of behavior should not be tolerated at any level of hockey period. Ballard is lucky that all Vokoun suffered was an ear laceration, this could of been a hell of  a lot worse. GROW UP.

Florida GM Randy Sexton said. ”There was no internal ear damage, just a laceration. They stitched him up, took a CAT scan and there’s no additional injuries.” Continue reading »

The last time the Montreal Canadiens stepped on the ice against the Boston Bruins, the Habs were making tee times as the Bruins swept out the Habs in the first round of the playoffs. Tonight marks the 700th meeting between these original six rivals,  the Bruins lifetime record is 262-330-103-4 vs the Canadiens. Arguably, this is the one of the best rivals in sports history.

Last season the Bruins went 5-0-1 vs the Habs during the regular season and you’ll have to go back to 3/20/08 to find the last time the Bruins lost in regulation to the Habs. Ironically, Michael Ryder had the game winning goal that night in the Habs 4-2 victory at the Garden. Continue reading »

More bad luck for the Boston Bruins as they placed Marc Savard on Long Term injured reserve. Savard has suffered a broken left foot and will miss four to six weeks. The I95 shuffle continues for the Bruins as they call up Trent Whitfield from the Providence Bruins. Whitfield was signed by the Bruins in July as a free agent. Whitfield has tallied 3 goals and 5 assists in the six games he has played in Providence. Trent has appeared in 177 NHL games having 11 goals and 17 assists.

Boston.com is reporting that Savard has been playing through the injury that apparently happened in a pre season practice when he took a shot off the left foot. Marc re-injured the left foot in practice yesterday and will not need surgery.

The less than impressive Nashville Predators (2-4-1) come to Boston tonight hoping to do what the Bruins are looking to do by getting on track this season. The big question I have is, what Bruins team will we see tonight in this Jeckle and Hyde season.

The B’s have three games in the next four nights and this will be a good test on what this squad will bring us this season. With Lucic out for the next 4-6 weeks, the rest of the team needs to bring their toughness to the rink tonight. Peter Chiarelli has sent a message with the recent trade of Kobesaw, the Bruins GM is trying to shake things up.

The Bruins acquired forward Daniel Paille from the Buffalo Sabres for a third round pick in 2010 and a conditional 4th round pick in 2010. The 6 foot 197 pound Paille has 35 goals, 42 assists and 54 pim in the 195 games played in the NHL but has played only appeared in 2 games for the Sabres this season. Hard to believe but this marks the first ever trade between the two franchises.

The good news for the B’s would be that Shawn Thorton who was listed day to day should return tonight. Look for Thorton to play on the 4th line with Begin and Bitz. More good news may be defenseman Dennis Wideman who has been sidelined since October 10th could also return tonight. With the acquisition of Paille and the return of Thorton and Wideman, the B’s have assigned Lefebrve to Providence.

Milan Lucic will miss tonights game against the Coyotes after hitting the boards in last nights game against Dallas. The Bruins have not disclosed the injury and have called up Guillaume Lefebvre from the Providence Bruins and he is expected to play tonight. Lefebvre the 6’1″ 195 pound winger is reportedly going to wear #92. Lefebvre tallied 4 goals, 9 assists and 206 PIM in 70 games for the Springfield Falcons last season. So far this season in 4 games for Providence, Lefebvre has 1 assist and 25 PIM. The B’s took this morning off so there is no word on what line Lefebvre will skate on if any. I am guessing he will not be on a scoring line, just a hunch.

There is no question that with the sluggish economy, certain luxuries lose out on the deal and major sports is not excluded.  Don’t get me wrong, the NHL just had their fourth consecutive attendance record with 21,475,223 overall giving the league an average of 17,460 per game and there is no doubt that the birth of the Winter Classic has boosted the interest in hockey in most areas.

The Pittsburgh Penquins had a first in franchise history , back to back season sell outs. Other teams that sold out the 2008-09 season were the Canucks, Leafs, Oilers, Rangers and Flames with the Bruins, Blackhawks, Canadiens and Minnesota Wild with significant increases over the 07-08 season.

So what’s the problem you ask? The smaller market teams are suffering severely, teams like the Panthers, Predators and Thrashers who are looking to sell or move out of Atlanta. It’s no secret in the NHL that the Coyotes are in serious trouble and what about the Islanders who thought signing a goalie to a 100 year contract (obviously exaggerated) would fill the seats.

Then you have the city of Winnipeg, looking to get an NHL team and there is some rumors out of Winnipeg of course, that the Atlanta or possibly Pheonix are just a few teams that may be looking to re-locate to Winnepeg. But is that the answer?  Lets think about this, a city that once had an NHL team and lost it , only has a 15,000 seat arena wants an a team that once played there.

Here’s the harsh reality, with the crazy money that pro players make now a days and the sluggish economy, unless you have a very strong core of players in your locker room, you will not fill the seats. There are 30 NHL teams, use that formula and do the math…we are talking about roughly 150 marquis players (give or take)are needed to make 30 teams strong enough to survive.

There is no shame with a few of these teams shutting down and letting those fourth line players and back-up goalies, play where they should be.. the AHL. There are great advantages of downsizing, the players I am referring to will get some quality ice time instead of a shift or two a game and it will make both the AHL and the NHL well represented.

Bruins season tickets price from $1247 to $9116 per seat with only seats $3098 and up available. Going to an AHL game is a great alternative with ticket prices under 20 bucks. They are very kid oriented with games and events going on through out the building. I personally think that the AHL should expand and the NHL should down size. It is time to give the fans some quality hockey games for the price they are paying to see them.
