I am SO VERY PROUD of my niece. Lydia is an All Star goalie herself so Thomas winning the game and making the Olympic team was all the more memorable for her. I watched the game on TV - but to see the game through her eyes is so much better. Imagine being ten-years old and having a story to tell her children. Imagine that.............

This is a great recap. We too were there and were frustrated at the first part of the game when everyone was standing and it was hard to see. The crowd finally sat down in our section, though, so we could see everything that was going on. It was quite an amazing site, and I'm so fortunate that our entire family was able to attend. I forgot about the Lets Go Bruins vs. Lets Go Flyers chant...but how about when the entire crowd started to spontaneously chant "Yankees Suck". The Flyers people had no idea what on earth was going on...and I think they thought we were all crazy when tens of thousands of us started singing Sweet Caroline. The Flyers fans around us didn't seem to know what do make of it. A fun day, indeed.

I hate to break it to you, it doesn't appear from what you told me that a penalty shot should be rewarded. the player has to be on a clear break from outside the blue line in USA rules. The too many men again is not a penalty as I explained, the player was at the door trying to get off therefore making him out of the play and is not considered in play. If I am going to say anything negative about the ref, all I can say is that he should not have said that they do not call penalty shots in mite or squirts.

I understand both to be grey areas.. I just didn't like the reasons for the non-call from the ref... the penalty shot infraction was clear as day and even the ref saw it like I did, but he just gave a minor penalty not a shot when the defensemen new he was beat and grabbed the player with his left hand and yanked the player down.. passed the blue line probably 15' from the net.. That's a penalty shot all day long in my book.. but the ref says "I don't call penalty shots in the squirts and mites".. those were his exact words.. As for the too many men on ice.. the exiting player was at the door and the substitute player who just stepped on the ice was passed the puck and it careened off his stick and hit the exiting player who had not gotten off the ice yet.. I know about the buffer zone.. and maybe I'm reading into this a lot more than I should.. but if the exiting player isn't totally off the ice and the substitute plays the puck... no penalty.. but the puck hit the exiting player (who wasn't intentionally playing the puck) after the 6th man on the ice had attempted to play it.. A BIG GREY AREA I GUESS.... Like I said earlier, if you don't see exactly what happened and you admit it.. I accept that... If you make a lame excuse because of incompetence.. that's what gets me...

Without me seeing the situation it would be hard to judge what happened in your game Drew, what I can tell you is how the rules work in both of your situations and mites or squirts does not make a difference. A lot of people are not aware of the criteria of a penalty shot and I will try to explain it. First the player has to be in on a clean breakaway from the attacking blue line(USA and High School rules) and center ice(NCAA rules). The player has to get fowled from beyond his or her peripheral vision(diagonal from shoulders) or behind them. If the player gets a reasonable shot on net, there is no penalty shot although the penalty should be assessed. As far as the too many men non-call. There is a buffer zone along the boards to allow the player to get off the ice meaning if he is standing on the boards trying to get off the ice and a puck hits him and he does not play it, that is a clean play. I am not sure how far from the bench the player was in your situation but I can tell you that if he was more than a couple of feet from the bench then it should be called.
