After a tough overtime loss the night before, the New Hampshire came back to the Mullins Center Saturday night for a rematch with the Minutemen. The teams exchanged chances early, but it took until late in first period for the first goal. Bobby Butler of New Hampshire capitalized on a UMass turnover on a break out and was able to beat Paul Dainton. In the second, UMass‘s Will Ortiz got the puck in the offensive slot and wired a shot low blocker-side to tie the game. Less than a minute later, Peter Leblanc, a Blackhawk prospect, walked out of the corner and deked forehand to backhand to regain the lead for the Wildcats. With a minute and a half left in the second and down by two, Martin Nolet walked off the point and took a slapshot that beat UNH goalie Brian Foster. The game was sealed when Mike Sislo tipped a Leblanc pass to give a UNH a 4-2 lead. After that point, the Wildcats dropped into a 1-2-2 forecheck that put Mullins Center to sleep and get the weekend split. Despite the loss, the weekend pushed UMass up to the number eleven spot on the national rankings. The Minutemen will next take on Yale on Friday night in New Haven.

Friday, the New Hampshire Wildcats rolled into Amherst for a weekend series with the Minutemen. It was Umass who got off to a strong start, dominating the play for most of the first period. Michael Lacomte scored the first goal of the game when Wildcat goalie Brian Foster kicked a Will Ortiz shot across the slot towards Lacomte, who beat the defender and buried his third goal of the year. Minutes later, captain Justin Braun rushed into the offensive zone and absolutely hammered a slapshot high short side on the wildcat netminder and Umass took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. New Hampshire came back to the ice looking like a whole new team. They first got one the board when Stevie Moses came streaking into the slot, received a pass from line mate Mike Borinsenok and deked out UMass goalie Paul Dainton with a backhand to forehand move. Still in the second, after New Hampshire had controlled the play for while, Peter Leblanc tied up the game, collecting a loose puck in front of the net and firing it into the net. By late in the third, the Minutemen found themselves down 3-2. With only eleven seconds on the clock Casey Wellman got to a rebound off a Danny Hobbs shot and sent the game to overtime. In the extra frame, David Boehm walked in to UNH ice, and used the defenseman as a screen, to take a quick wrist shot that beat Foster low blocker side. The win put UMass in first place in Hockey East with a conference record 4-1 and an overall record of 6-1. The two teams will go at it again Saturday night at the Mullins Center.
